Sometimes, enough material of ectomycorrhizae is available to study those chemical compounds which cause the colours. A co-operation with an organic chemical laboratory will be necessary. The compounds proven as being present in fruitbodies should not be deduced from as being characteristic for the ectomycorrhizae as well; ectomycorrhizae may possibly lack some compounds found in fruitbodies. However, ectomycorrhizae must be examined.
