Anatomy of haustoria

As haustoria all hyphal structures are considered which protrude into the cortical cell through the cell wall and originate from the Hartig net or grow out of the Hartig net region, irrespective of their shape. Cytoplasmatic contents must indicate that haustoria grow within a living cell. Already dead cells can frequently be colonized saprophytically by hyphae. Ssometimes tannin cells as well are aims of hyphal growth, but these structures are not regarded as haustoria.
