Ultrastructure

Transmission electron microscopy provides some important features. Particularly matrix characteristics of mantle, septal pore structures and attributes of hyphal surface are very informative. Scanning electron microscopy can help to describe shapes of crystals or warts; but these features are included under "anatomy".

Methods to study these features have repeatedly been explained, e.g. Massicotte et al. (1985): Proc. Microsc. Soc. Can. 12: 68-69; Massicotte et al. (1986): Can. J. Bot. 64: 177-192; Haug et al. (1994): Trees 8: 237-253.
