Tannin cells can be discerned as homogeneously or granularly filled brownish outer cells of the root. They are different from remnants of calyptra cells, which often are only small lines or triangular structures in the outer corners of the most outward cortex cell layer; very often, they are included within the inner mantle layers, but they can appear as well as small lines also adjacent to the outer part of the most inward hyphal cell row of the mantle. Calyptra cell derivates are frequently less granular and of lighter brown colour than tannin cells.
